At the beginning of the month, we saw our state’s GOP once again relapse into the inflammatory conspiracies of the 2022 campaign cycle. During a hearing of the new Ad Hoc Committee on Oversight, Accountability, and Big Tech, members of the Arizona GOP trotted out both old and new theories to rationalize their electoral failures. “It wasn’t our extreme policies and candidates that turned off swing voters in 2022, it must have been Google!” Big tech and social media companies are not above oversight, regulation and fair criticism, but that’s not what this committee provided. While our communities persevere through a record-breaking heat wave, crumbling infrastructure, and housing insecurity, too many of our lawmakers are focused on platforming bizarre backward-looking anti-democracy conspiracies.
We’re tired of the antics. Arizonians need focused leadership and bipartisan solutions to the issues that impact their lives every day. Grandstanding committees and alternate realities send the wrong message about our priorities and waste valuable time. I’m ready to work. I know my Democratic colleagues are ready to work. I’m inviting Republicans who are serious about policy solutions to join us.
